Sargento Food is a food company which recently recalled a huge quantity of their cheese after the discovery that their cheese is contaminated with listeria monocytogenes came to light. As luck would have it, reports about illness or fatalities haven’t been reported until now.

Being a pathogenic bacterium, listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis. Listeriosis is a very serious infection and there are 1600 cases of it on a yearly basis, and 260 cases are fatal. This bacterium is particularly dangerous for people with weak immune system, people older than 65, pregnant women and newborns.

According to representatives from the food company, they are closely monitoring the situation and have begun investigating their supplier, who notified them that their cheese is contaminated.
